How I fixed my hamstring (part 2)
Dear visitor of website Hathayoga.lv,
My last hamstring email flooded my inbox,
Facebook, and Twitter pages with responses…
So let me get right into it and tell you how I fixed
my hamstrings (yes, I ended up pulling the left
one too).
ICE: This is helpful the first few days only. After
that, I find it totally pointless. Alternating ice/heat
is meant to increase circulation, but most of these
routines are prescribed by doctors who feel like
they need to have some advice for their patients who,
for the most part, don’t actually move except to grab
some bonbons from the freezer on commercial breaks…
… so yeah, ice it good and cold the first few days,
but after that, lose the ice.
DON’T STOP STRETCHING: Everyone I talked to
including yoga teachers told me to stop practicing
until it healed. There were two fundamental problems
with this.
(a) By that time, I was totally hooked on yoga and
hated missing even one day of practice
(b) While resting did help it heal, as soon as I’d do
anything, my hammy’s would flare up just like before
*Don’t get me wrong here. If you absolutely quit doing
anything and “lay flat” for 2 months, your hamstring
will heal. It’ll heal fast and hard and tight, but as soon
as you try to use it again, it’s going to hurt.
FORGET MASSAGES: I know I’ll get hate mail for saying
this, but …

World Yoga Day 26th of February 2012 will be also in Jurmala!
On Sunday the 26th of February 2012, yoga teachers and schools around the world will donate their time and space to a two hour yoga session which is devoted to human rights.
The class should be held from 11AM – 1PM sharp, local time in each time zone, which will lead to a 24 hour yoga marathon around the world. Devoting our thoughts and energy globally to the human rights issue will generate a powerful impact.
Students attending the event will donate whatever tuition they can afford. All contributions are welcome and also students who can’t pay at all – the money is important to help victims of human right violation but so is the spirit.
We love to see yogis from all styles participate in this wonderful event whether Iyengar, Bikram, Anusara, Ashtanga, Laughter Yoga…at the heart of any yoga style stands the union. Bringing all yogis worldwide together to devote their practice to this important cause will be a wonderful, spirited celebration of yoga.
Our aim is that as many nations as possible come together on this project, especially countries where human rights violation is a more dominant issue.

The day my hamstring bled
Dear visitor of website Hathayoga.lv,
I pulled my right hamstring so badly once that it
bled under my skin.
Let me tell you the story so you learn what NOT
to do.
I used to be so stiff, I literally could not bend forward,
my back would curl up like a cat and my hands would
touch just below my knees.
Glad those days are gone.
I also didn’t know anything about stretching. I’d done
lots of running, swimming, and even some weights, but
I had no idea how stretching worked.
Ok, enough beating around the bush. Here’s what
happened:
This girl talked me into going to yoga, and she was pretty
good. I was like this big white whale dripping with sweat
and grunting like a wrestler attempting these super-basic
poses.
Not quite the image I was going for…
… and worse yet, I got so sore after my first classes, I couldn’t
walk straight. No exaggeration here, I was limping down
New York City’s streets just trying to walk the 1/2 mile
from my apartment to work.
So what did I do? I took 2 Advil.

Why I like to be hungry for yoga
Dear visitor of website Hathayoga.lv,
Food and yoga don’t really mix.
Students are always coming up with a million
reasons why they have to eat before they practice,
but from a purely physical standpoint, your body
just performs best (for yoga) when your G.I. tract
is empty.
You’ll feel lighter, stronger, more energetic, and
absolutely more flexible than you will with even
a light meal inside you.
I know, I know… your blood sugar is low and you
just love to wake up and eat a cream cheese bagel
and coffee right away.
Food habits are hard to break, but really, most
are just habits. You can form new ones, usually
after just 2-3 weeks of practice.
Back in my corporate warrior days, I used to guzzle
two cups of heavy cream coffee on my way to the
gym and suck down a Powerbar before flailing on
the Stairmaster for 30 minutes.
In retrospect, I probably would have been better
off just sleeping;)
